Our vision is for each pupil to trust they belong, discover a love of learning and to find their sense of self-worth.
Our Vision
Through our Therapeutic Community approach, accredited by the Royal College of Psychiatrists, we support pupils to overcome their barriers and re-engage in education following often extensive periods of disengagement.
We are ambitious for our pupils, and we begin planning for their educational journey with aspirational goals from their very first day.
Most of our pupils are cognitively able within normal range but may have underlying barriers such as dyslexia or attention deficit disorder and haven’t been able to thrive in a typical mainstream environment due to their demand avoidant behaviours.
The ability of our pupils to mask their anxiety in this way has meant many have been misunderstood and often mislabelled as ‘naughty’. Misunderstandings like these have placed many of our families in challenging situations as they have attempted to secure the correct diagnosis; as a result, many of our children have been educated at home whilst they await an allocation of effective support.
This resulted in them feeling that they didn’t fit or belong within a school setting and therefore haven’t experienced the sense of achievement that learning can bring. Our aim is to change this.
Our pupils have not had a good relationship with education and over a quarter of them pupils have never been able to attend school due to profoundly high anxiety. Those who have attended have often been on reduced timetables, often in their own separate spaces leaving them unable to make friends and lacking a sense of belonging. This has placed incredible pressure on our families.
They are now able to make a positive start to their learning journey. The stories below, written by our parents and pupils will illustrate the journeys of some of our pupils, giving you a snapshot of our specialist setting.
“Due to only negative experience at schools, and being constantly excluded, my son believed that no school would be interested in him and his ways. This made him anxious with low self-esteem.
Now, not only does Theo believe that he goes to the best school in the world. He believes this since his thoughts and opinions are are so welcomed, that he’s involved in constantly improving his school. He starts every day full of confidence and can’t wait to get to school to share his bright ideas with friends and teachers”.
“I feel like my relationship with lots of the teachers and kids have changed a lot and that I am very different to when I first started and I still have some way to go but I’m getting there.
I feel like the months with joe as my teacher was what helped me think more positively and get back on track and control my anger so that my go-to thing when I get annoyed is not to hit someone but to go for a walk or something like that.
Going for a walk each day helped me open up in a place I felt more relaxed and also gave me a routine and structure to my day, I know they having a walk at lunchtime each day I can always talk about if anything upset me in the morning and if anything is worrying me about the afternoon.
My circle or teacher that I like in the school has definitely expanded and now I feel like I need to work on getting my work done every day fully and continue to do lots of work so I can get good GCSE’s as that is my main goal”.
